About Me

My name is Lughano Nyondo. I am a striker for Ascent girls’ soccer academy based in Mzuzu, Malawi. One day I saw Tabitha Chawinga playing at the stadium in Mzuzu. This experience inspired me to I start playing football at the age of nine with the boys in my community even though many people made fun of me because I was a girl. Eventually, I was allowed to play with the under-20 girls until the team disbanded a short while later. In 2017 I was scouted by Ascent soccer and was the only female of five athletes, selected out 1000 players, who was allowed to join the academy. After a year playing with the academy, I earned a scholarship to attend one of the best schools in Malawi, Bishop Mackenzie. A year later I earned an athletic and academic scholarship to study abroad at Indian Mountain School, in Connecticut.

Soccer has taught me that with courage, hard work, and passion you can achieve your goals even in the face of adversity.
